May 2011: An Exceptional Spring! |
|
The month of May 2011 has been characterized by exceptionally warm weather. Strong rays of sunshine and above average temperatures have favored an early start to the vines’ flowering: the blossoming process started 2 to 3 weeks in advance depending on the terroirs. Every walk through the vineyards provides for an awakening of the senses. In fact, the vines’ flowers release wonderful smells of white flowers; subtly blending nuances of jasmine and acacia bouquets. Flowers, like the rest of vegetation, have been affected by this early warmth. The date of this year’s harvest thus remains uncertain, the old tradition of harvesting 90 days after the blossoming of the lilies or the vines might actually be put into question. We are also pondering this issue, like most winemakers in Burgundy…. Which of the flowers, the lily or the vine, should we focus on the most in order to predict the ideal time to harvest? One thing is for sure, the 2011 harvest will start earlier than usual, according to the whims of the sun and the unfolding summer. |

January 2011: A new press quote in UK for one of our wine |
|
|
Nicolas Potel Montagny 1er Cru 2008 This white Burgundy from the southerly district of Montagny on the Côte Chalonnaise has a very attractive nose where crushed almond and oatmeal intermingle with crisp apple and orange aromas. On the palate it is clean as a whistle and braced by lemon-zest acidity, but that dry, savoury apple fruit and hint of creamy oak support elegantly. Score: |

Décember 2009: Best Wishes |

Dear Friends, The harvests are not far behind us and Christmas is already here… Fermentation went well. All the mini cuvees that have macerated and fermented in the 500-litre casks and whose juices have been extracted in our vertical presses were casked between 26th and 30th October. They are already expressing exciting aromatic and flavour potential with balance, supple body and lots of generosity. I’m doing all I can to ensure that each of our terroirs demonstrates its strength and I am focusing my energies on each cuvee. I’m convinced that in a few years these juices will delight wine enthusiasts. They are currently being aged in our cellars. Our little nursery is having a rest, sleeping, gathering its strength after the extensive microbiological fermenting activity in September. Things are calming down…as am I… In the darkness I examine, watch and observe the tiniest change of pitch in the malo-lactic fermentation. For the moment, all is quiet. I have an idea of the tune I should be hearing but its starting note is yet to be struck… For the moment I’m not interfering. The instruments are silent. On Christmas Eve I’ll play them some Christmas carols on an old gramophone that I found at my grandfather’s house. It still works… As the end of the year approaches, I want to thank you for your loyalty. I look forward to seeing you soon in our cellars here at Nuits-Saint-Georges. All the best to you for the greeting season. The Winemaker , |

September 2009: On the mark... |
Years go by but don’t look the same… will 2009 be an exceptional vintage? I cannot claim it but I’m sure of one thing: we are on the way to make wines as good as the outstanding vintages ending with 9: 1999, 1989, 1979, 1969… In 2009, the sunshine rate has been higher than the previous years; this will enable us to harvest healthy and high-quality grapes. The Nicolas Potel winery will start the grape harvest season on September 14th. From this day on, get ready to have juicy news. The Winemaker, |
